By Italian law, wineries must wait 5 years before releasing Brunello di Montalcino, and 6 years before making Brunello di Montalcino Riserva available. That means you’ll start seeing 2011 Brunello and 2010 Riservas in the market at some point this spring.
However, if you’re in the trade or a member of the wine press, you can get an early taste of the new vintages of Brunello (and Rosso di Montalcino) at Benvenuto Brunello — an event that takes place annually in Montalcino, Italy, and select cities around the world. This year, Benvenuto Brunello will be held Tuesday January 19 in New York City at Gotham Hall from 1 PM to 6 PM and in Chicago on Thursday January 21 from 1 PM to 5 PM at the Drake Hotel. RSVP to either event here.
If you’re able to attend either of the events, be sure to stop by the Castello Banfi table and say hello!
